Ingredients
Fresh Ingredients
- 1 piece garlic clove
- 1 inch fresh ginger root
- ½ inch fresh turmeric root (or 1 tsp dried turmeric powder)
- 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro (optional)
- Juice of ½ lime or lemon
- Cilantro or other fresh greens for garnish
Liquids
- 2½ cups water
- 2½ cups broth (vegetable or chicken broth recommended)
Spices and Seasonings
- 1 piece bay leaf
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- Pinch of salt (to taste)
- ⅛ teaspoon grated nutmeg
- 2-3 leaves sage (fresh or dried)
- 5 whole juniper berries
Instructions
- Prep Fresh Ingredients: Peel the garlic clove and chop it roughly. Cut the ginger and turmeric roots into rough pieces. If using turmeric powder, measure 1 teaspoon and set aside.
- Pour Water and Broth into Pot: Pour 2½ cups of water and 2½ cups of broth into a small soup pot. Place the pot on the stove and heat over medium heat.
- Add Ginger, Garlic, and Turmeric: Add the chopped ginger, garlic, and turmeric (fresh pieces or powder) into the pot with the liquids.
- Season the Broth: Add the bay leaf, ground black pepper, pinch of salt, grated nutmeg, sage leaves, and whole juniper berries to the pot.
- Stir in Cilantro (Optional): If desired, stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh cilantro for added flavor and aroma.
- Simmer the Soup: Reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the pot. Let the broth simmer gently for 12 to 15 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.
- Add Lime or Lemon Juice: Once done simmering, remove the pot from heat and stir in the juice of half a lime or lemon.
- Strain the Soup: Pour the soup through a large strainer or sieve to remove solids and obtain a clear broth.
- Serve: Return the strained soup to heat if desired and serve hot in bowls. Garnish with fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, or chives for an extra touch of freshness.
