This 20 Minute Skinny Sesame Chicken is a quick and healthier twist on the classic Chinese restaurant favorite. Using lean chicken breast and a flavorful homemade sauce, it delivers all the savory, sweet, and tangy notes of traditional sesame chicken without the extra calories and fat. Perfect for a fast weeknight dinner!

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Chicken and Cooking

  • 1 tablespoon oil (peanut or vegetable)
  • 1 pound chicken breast, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, grated
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or cider vinegar)
  • 1 teaspoon chili sauce (such as sambal oelek)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Finishing Touches

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and cook chicken: Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken pieces and sauté until they are lightly golden brown and cooked through.
  2. Add aromatics: Add the grated garlic and ginger to the skillet with the chicken and cook for about one minute, until fragrant.
  3. Prepare and add sauce: In a bowl, mix together chicken broth, brown sugar, honey, soy sauce, ketchup, rice vinegar, chili sauce, and cornstarch. Pour this sauce mixture into the skillet, bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cook until the sauce thickens slightly, about one minute.
  4. Finish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in the sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds, and sliced green onions. Serve the sesame chicken hot over steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

  • Use chicken breast for a leaner option, or chicken thighs for juicier meat.
  • You can adjust the sweetness and heat by varying the brown sugar, honey, and chili sauce to taste.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables or a side of fried rice for a complete meal.
  • To make it gluten free, use tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce alternative.
