Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 1/8 cups warm water (around 114°F, not boiling)
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 egg
Dry Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 2 cups bread flour (all-purpose can be used alternatively)
- 1 1/2 cups bread flour (all-purpose can be used alternatively)
- 1 teaspoon salt
Other
- Butter (for brushing tops after baking)
Instructions
- Prepare Yeast Mixture: In the bowl of your stand mixer, combine warm water (1 1/8 cups), olive oil (1/3 cup), active dry yeast (2 tablespoons), and white sugar (1/4 cup). Stir lightly to mix the ingredients.
- Activate Yeast: Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes so the yeast can bloom. You’ll notice the mixture becomes puffy, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
- Add Initial Dry Ingredients and Egg: Attach the dough hook to your stand mixer and add 2 cups bread flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 egg to the yeast mixture. Start mixing to begin forming the dough.
- Add Remaining Flour: Gradually add the remaining 1 1/2 cups bread flour while the mixer runs, allowing the dough to come together smoothly.
- Knead the Dough: Let the mixer knead the dough until it forms a smooth ball. The dough should be fairly soft but not sticky.
- Shape Rolls: Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Place the balls evenly spaced in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Rest the Dough: Let the shaped dough rest for 10 minutes to slightly rise while you preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
- Bake the Rolls: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until the tops turn just golden brown.
- Brush with Butter: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops generously with butter for a rich, glossy finish.
- Serve: Let the rolls cool slightly, then enjoy warm. Perfect for dinner sides or sandwiches.
Notes
- Use warm water around 114°F to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
- Olive oil adds flavor and tenderness; you can substitute with vegetable oil if preferred.
- All-purpose flour can be used instead of bread flour but may result in slightly softer rolls.
- Brush with melted butter immediately after baking for the best flavor and appearance.
- These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
