This 5 Minute Homemade Ice Cream recipe is a quick and fun way to make delicious ice cream right at home with just a few simple ingredients and no ice cream maker required. Using a simple bag method, you combine cream, half and half, sugar, and vanilla, then shake it with ice and salt to create a creamy, sweet treat in minutes—perfect for a quick dessert or a fun activity with kids.

  • Total Time: 12 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Ice Cream Mixture

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Ice Salt Mixture

  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup salt (or ice cream salt)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Pour 1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup half and half, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly and gently squish it around to combine the ingredients until the sugar dissolves completely.
  2. Prepare Ice Bag: In another gallon-sized resealable plastic bag, place 2 cups of ice cubes and 1/2 cup of salt. The salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, helping the mixture freeze faster.
  3. Insert Ice Cream Bag: Place the sealed ice cream mixture bag inside the larger bag containing the ice and salt. Seal the larger bag well to prevent leaks.
  4. Shake to Freeze: Shake the bags vigorously for about 5 to 7 minutes. The constant shaking combined with the cold ice-salt mixture will freeze the ice cream mixture, turning it into creamy ice cream.

Notes

  • Use ice cream salt for best results, but regular salt works as a substitute.
  • Shake the bags firmly but gently to avoid puncturing.
  • You can add mix-ins like chocolate chips or fruit after shaking.
  • For a firmer consistency, place the ice cream in the freezer for 10-15 minutes after shaking.
  • This method is an engaging activity to do with kids and requires no special equipment.
