These Air Fryer Apple Fries are a sweet and crunchy snack or dessert that come together quickly with simple ingredients. Coated in a spiced flour and cinnamon mixture, then air fried to perfection, they offer a delightful combination of crispy texture and warm, cozy flavors perfect for fall or any time you want a healthy twist on a treat.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Apples

  • 2 large Honeycrisp apples

Flour Coating

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tablespoons apple pie spice
  • 5 Tablespoons cinnamon (reserve 1 Tablespoon for topping)

Egg Wash

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Topping

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar

Additional

  • Olive oil nonstick spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Use an apple peeler to remove the skins from each apple. Then, cut the peeled apples in half and slice each half into ½ inch wedges.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, apple pie spice, and 4 tablespoons of cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Coat Apples with Flour Mixture: Transfer the flour mixture to a large bowl or container with a lid. Add the apple wedges, secure the lid, and shake vigorously to coat all the apple pieces evenly.
  4. Remove Excess Flour: Using a large slotted spoon, lift the coated apple wedges from the container. Shake off excess flour and place them on a plate. Keep the remaining flour mixture in the container for the next coating step.
  5. Prepare Egg Wash: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Dredge Apples in Egg Wash: Dip the apple wedges, a few at a time, into the egg mixture ensuring they are fully coated.
  7. Double Coat with Flour Mixture: Return the egg-coated apples to the container with the leftover flour mixture. Shake the container again to evenly coat the wedges a second time.
  8. Make Cinnamon Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix the remaining 1 tablespoon cinnamon with the brown sugar and set aside.
  9. Prepare Air Fryer Basket: Spray the air fryer basket generously with olive oil nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  10. Air Fry Apples (First Side): Place the coated apple wedges in a single layer inside the basket (work in batches if needed). Spray the exposed apple surfaces with olive oil spray and sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar topping over them. Cook at 350°F for 6 minutes.
  11. Flip and Finish Cooking: Open the basket carefully, flip the apple wedges to the other side, spray again with oil, and sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar topping. Cook for an additional 6 minutes at 350°F until crispy and golden.
  12. Serve: Remove the apple fries from the air fryer and serve warm. They are delicious on their own or paired with caramel sauce or a simple powdered sugar glaze.

Notes

  • Honeycrisp apples are recommended for their tart sweetness and firm texture, but you can substitute other firm apples like Fuji or Granny Smith.
  • Make sure to coat the apples evenly for a crispy texture.
  • Work in batches when air frying to ensure proper cooking and crispiness.
  • Serving with caramel sauce or powdered sugar glaze adds extra indulgence but is optional.
  • Use olive oil nonstick spray to keep the apple fries from sticking and to help achieve a golden crust.
  • Adjust cinnamon sugar topping to taste if you prefer it sweeter or less spiced.
