Ingredients
Hamburger Steaks
- 2 lbs Ground beef – 80/20 blend for best flavor
- ½ cup Breadcrumbs – Plain or seasoned
- 1 Egg – Beaten
- 1 Onion – Finely diced
- 2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black pepper
Creamy Gravy
- 3 tablespoon Butter – Salted or unsalted
- 3 tablespoon All-purpose flour – For thickening gravy
- 2 cups Beef broth – Low sodium preferred
- 1 cup Heavy cream
- 1 Onion – Sliced
- 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
Instructions
- Mix the Hamburger Steak Ingredients: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just mixed to keep the patties tender.
- Form Patties: Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set aside so they can rest briefly while you prepare the gravy base.
- Brown the Patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add butter and sauté the sliced onions until softened. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, adding garlic powder, and continue stirring until the gravy is smooth and slightly thickened.
- Bake with Patties: Nestle the browned hamburger patties into the creamy gravy in the skillet. Cover the skillet tightly and place it in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C).
- Bake Covered: Bake the skillet covered for 45 minutes, allowing the patties to cook through and absorb the flavors from the gravy.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the cover and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy on top and finish cooking the patties.
- Rest and Serve: Take the skillet out of the oven and let the hamburger steaks rest for 10 minutes to let the flavors meld and juices redistribute before serving.
Notes
- Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and juiciness.
- For a smoother gravy, whisk constantly while adding broth and cream.
- If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, transfer patties and gravy to a 9×13 baking dish before baking.
- A meat thermometer can help ensure patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) for safety.
- Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles to soak up the rich gravy.
