Cooked either in the oven, under the broiler, or on the stovetop, the dish is enhanced with melted butter and served with fresh lime wedges for a zesty finish. Perfect for a quick and satisfying meal, this recipe yields two servings and highlights bold Cajun-inspired flavors.

  • Total Time: 17 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

Seasoning Mix

  • 1 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (packed)

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb tilapia fillets
  • 3-4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2-4 wedges of lime (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter: Melt the unsalted butter in a wide, shallow bowl to prepare for dipping the fish.
  2. Prepare Seasoning: Combine all the seasoning ingredients (smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried thyme, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, and brown sugar) in one bowl and mix thoroughly. Spread the seasoning evenly on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper to aid in easy cleanup.
  3. Dry the Fish: Pat the tilapia fillets dry with paper towels to ensure the seasoning sticks well.
  4. Coat the Fish: Dip each fillet in the melted butter on both sides, allowing excess butter to drip off, then place the fillet on the prepared seasoning sheet. Press lightly to coat evenly on both sides. Repeat with remaining fillets.
  5. Prepare Skillet: Pour any leftover melted butter into a cast iron skillet and spread it evenly to prevent sticking and add flavor.
  6. Choose Cooking Method: There are three cooking options:
  7. Oven Cooking: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and place the empty skillet inside to get hot for a few minutes. Remove the skillet, add the seasoned fish fillets, and bake for 12-13 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Broiler Cooking: Turn the broiler to high and preheat. Position the oven rack so the skillet will be 6-8 inches from the broiler. Preheat the skillet in the oven for a few minutes, remove it, add the fish, then broil on low until cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  9. Stovetop Cooking: Preheat the skillet over medium-high heat, then reduce to medium. Add the fish fillets and cook for approximately 4 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  10. Serve: Remove cooked tilapia from the skillet and serve immediately topped with lime wedges for a fresh, tangy accent.

Notes

  • Ensure the tilapia fillets are patted dry for optimal seasoning adhesion.
  • Use a cast iron skillet for the best cooking results and flavor development.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper quantity according to your preferred spice level.
  • Keep an eye on the fish when broiling to prevent burning due to high heat.
  • The brown sugar in the seasoning adds a subtle sweetness that balances the spice.
  • Lime wedges add freshness and a zesty contrast to the smoky, spicy fish.
