4.2 from 13 reviews

This homemade Blueberry Chia Jam is a naturally sweetened, nutrient-packed spread perfect for breakfasts, snacks, or desserts. Made with fresh or frozen blueberries, a touch of maple syrup, and chia seeds, this jam thickens without added pectin and requires simple stovetop cooking. It’s wholesome, vegan, and gluten-free, offering a flavorful, easy-to-make alternative to store-bought jams.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Jam Base

  • 2 heaping cups fresh blueberries (can substitute frozen)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)

Thickening Agent

  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare the blueberries: Add the blueberries, maple syrup, and lemon zest to a saucepan. Place the pan over medium-low heat and cook until the berries begin to break down, their juices release, and the mixture thickens with bubbles forming. This process usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Use the back of a spoon or a large silicone fork to gently mash the berries during cooking to encourage their breakdown.
  2. Transfer from heat and season: Remove the saucepan from heat once the berries are softened and the mixture has slightly thickened. Taste the jam and adjust the sweetness or lemon zest as desired. Then stir in the chia seeds thoroughly.
  3. Set the jam: Let the jam sit at room temperature for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This resting time allows the chia seeds to absorb the liquid and thicken the jam to a spreadable consistency.
  4. Serve or store: Enjoy the jam warm immediately or transfer it to a clean jar and refrigerate to enjoy chilled later. The jam will keep well in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  5. Optional feedback: Feel free to rate or leave a review by using the stars on the recipe card or in the comments section to share your experience.

Notes

  • Using frozen blueberries is a convenient alternative, just thaw slightly before cooking.
  • The maple syrup and lemon zest are optional but add sweetness and brightness to the jam.
  • Stirring occasionally while the jam cools is important to prevent clumping of chia seeds.
  • Store leftover jam in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • This jam is naturally vegan, gluten free, and free of refined sugars if you omit the maple syrup.
