Crispy and spicy Buffalo Tofu Wings featuring extra-firm tofu coated in a flavorful seasoned batter and panko breadcrumbs, baked to perfection and tossed in a buttery vegan buffalo sauce. Perfect as a vegan appetizer or snack with a delightful kick and satisfying crunch.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 9 servings

Ingredients

Tofu Wings

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup plant-based milk
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

Buffalo Sauce

  • 1 cup buffalo sauce, preferably Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Sauce
  • 1 tbsp vegan butter

Instructions

  1. Press tofu: Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain the water. Wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or folded paper towels and place it on a plate. Top with heavy objects such as a cutting board weighted with books or canned goods. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes to press out excess moisture, then unwrap.
  2. Slice tofu: Cut the pressed tofu block into rectangular strips, approximately 9 to 12 pieces, for even coating and baking.
  3. Prepare baking tools: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
  4. Make wet batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, plant-based milk, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, and salt. Whisk until smooth and well incorporated.
  5. Prepare breadcrumbs: Place panko breadcrumbs in a separate bowl to coat the tofu strips after dipping in the batter.
  6. Coat tofu strips: Using a fork, dip each tofu strip into the wet batter, flipping to coat all sides and tapping off excess batter. Immediately dip into the panko breadcrumbs, tossing gently to fully coat the tofu. Arrange coated tofu strips on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake tofu wings: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, flipping the tofu strips halfway through baking to ensure even crispiness.
  8. Prepare buffalo sauce: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the buffalo sauce and vegan butter. Microwave for 1 minute to melt the butter, then stir until the sauce is uniform.
  9. Coat tofu in buffalo sauce: Remove baked tofu from the oven and dip each tofu wing into the buffalo sauce, flipping to coat both sides and tapping off excess sauce. Repeat until all tofu wings are coated.
  10. Serve or bake again: Serve immediately for a saucier wing or bake the coated tofu wings for an additional 15 minutes in the oven for extra crispiness. Serve with celery sticks and vegan ranch dip if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Pressing tofu is essential to firm up the texture and remove excess moisture for a crispier crust.
  • Use extra-firm tofu for best results in texture and handling during coating.
  • Panko breadcrumbs provide a light, crunchy exterior; regular breadcrumbs can be substituted but will be less crispy.
  • Baking at a high temperature ensures crispy tofu without deep frying.
  • Optional: Serve with celery sticks and a vegan ranch or blue cheese dip to complement the spicy buffalo flavor.
  • The buffalo sauce can be adjusted in heat intensity by selecting milder or hotter buffalo sauce brands.
