These Burger Bowls feature juicy pan-seared hamburger patties served over a bed of crisp romaine lettuce with fresh tomatoes, crispy fries, and a rich caramelized onion aioli. This dish is perfect for an easy, customizable meal prep option that combines savory flavors with creamy, tangy aioli to elevate your burger experience without the bun.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 5-6 servings

Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onion Aioli

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 large yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For the Burgers

  • 1 lb ground beef (80-85% lean)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • Roasted potatoes or French fries (homemade or frozen)
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Romaine lettuce, chopped

Instructions

  1. Make the Caramelized Onion: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions soften.
  2. Add Brown Sugar and Continue Cooking: Stir in the brown sugar and continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the onions become deeply golden brown and jammy. If the onions begin to stick or burn, add a splash of water to loosen and prevent burning.
  3. Prepare the Aioli: Transfer the caramelized onions to a bowl. Mix in mayonnaise, Greek yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste, and set aside.
  4. Form Burger Patties: Divide the ground beef into 5-6 equal portions and shape each into a patty. Season both sides generously with salt and black pepper.
  5. Cook the Burgers: Wipe out the skillet used for the onions and heat it over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 2-3 minutes per side or until cooked to your preferred level of doneness.
  6. Assemble the Burger Bowls: Arrange chopped romaine lettuce in bowls. Top with sliced tomatoes, cooked burger patties, and roasted potatoes or fries. Spoon dollops of caramelized onion aioli over the top to finish the dish.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken in place of beef.
  • Caramelized onion aioli can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Frozen fries can be oven-baked for convenience or swap with roasted potatoes for a homemade touch.
  • Adjust seasoning of the aioli and burgers according to taste preferences.
  • This recipe is easily customizable for dietary preferences by changing the protein and side choices.
