Ingredients
Pie Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Fresh cracked pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 8 ounces shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Pie Crust
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 teaspoon water
- 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
Toppings
- Easy homemade burger sauce
- Sliced iceberg lettuce
- Diced red onion
- Pickle chips
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204°C) to prepare for baking the puff pastry crust and assembled pie.
- Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef with a couple of pinches of kosher salt and freshly cracked pepper. Use a spatula to crumble and cook the beef until browned and fully cooked through.
- Add Onions and Seasoning: Stir in the diced yellow onion, garlic powder, onion powder, and additional pinches of salt and pepper. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften.
- Finish the Meat Mixture: Remove the pan from heat. Stir in the sweet pickle relish, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix well to combine all flavors.
- Prepare the Bottom Crust: Lightly grease an 11.5-inch deep-dish pie pan. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one sheet of puff pastry and press it evenly into the pie pan, trimming any excess. Use a fork to prick the crust all over to prevent air bubbles during baking.
- Blind Bake the Crust: Bake the prepared bottom crust for 10-15 minutes, until the edges start turning golden brown. Pop any forming air bubbles with a fork while baking.
- Assemble the Pie Filling: Spread the cooked meat mixture evenly over the partially baked bottom crust. Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese evenly on top of the meat layer.
- Prepare the Top Crust: Roll out the second puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Place it over the meat and cheese layer, trimming excess dough while leaving about a 1/2-inch overhang. Fold and crimp the edges to seal the pie securely.
- Apply Egg Wash and Add Seeds: In a small bowl, whisk the beaten egg with water. Brush this egg wash evenly over the entire surface of the pie crust. Sprinkle the sesame seeds on top to add texture and visual appeal. Cut four slits in the center of the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Bake the Pie: Place the assembled pie in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the top crust is a dark golden brown and fully cooked. If the edges brown faster than the center, cover the edges with a flat ring of foil to prevent burning while allowing the middle to finish baking.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for about 5 minutes to set. Slice the pie and serve with easy homemade burger sauce, sliced iceberg lettuce, diced red onion, and pickle chips for a classic cheeseburger experience.
Notes
- If the puff pastry warms too much and becomes sticky, chill it briefly before rolling to help with easier handling.
- Use sharp cheddar for the best melting quality and flavor intensity.
- You can make easy homemade burger sauce by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and a bit of pickle relish.
- Ensure to cut steam slits on the top crust to prevent soggy puff pastry and maintain flakiness.
- For a crisper bottom crust, consider placing the pie pan on a preheated baking sheet while baking.
- This pie is best served warm but can be reheated in the oven to maintain crispness.
