Ingredients
Ground Chicken Sloppy Joes
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small sweet onion, finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
- 1 pound ground chicken
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper (or less to taste)
Alfredo Sauce
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ¾ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
For Serving
- Sliced Provolone or Mozzarella cheese
- Buns
Instructions
- Sauté onion: In a large skillet pan over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the finely diced sweet onion and sauté until translucent and fragrant, about 3 minutes.
- Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, taking care not to burn it.
- Cook ground chicken: Add the ground chicken to the pan along with Italian seasoning, kosher salt, and black pepper. Cook while crumbling the meat until it is browned and no longer pink, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess liquid or grease from the pan.
- Make Alfredo sauce: In a separate small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the heavy cream, grated Parmesan cheese, and garlic powder. Stir constantly and cook for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Combine sauce and chicken: Pour the Alfredo sauce over the cooked ground chicken mixture in the skillet. Stir thoroughly to coat the chicken evenly. Simmer together for 10 minutes or until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Prepare buns and serve: Toast or broil the buns on a cookie sheet, optionally spreading butter or spraying with cooking spray before broiling for a few minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning. After broiling, add a slice of cheese on each top bun and broil again for about 30 seconds to melt the cheese. Serve the creamy chicken Alfredo sloppy joe mixture on the bottom buns and top with the prepared cheese bun halves. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
- Toasting or broiling the buns enhances flavor and adds a satisfying crunch to the sandwich.
- You can use either Provolone or Mozzarella cheese based on your preference for melting and taste.
- Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
- For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half but expect a thinner sauce.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat on stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of cream or milk to loosen the sauce if needed.
