Ingredients
Protein
- 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast
Vegetables
- 2 green bell peppers
- 1 large yellow onion
- 1 lb mushrooms
Other Ingredients
- 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive oil)
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 8 oz provolone cheese, sliced
- 6 hoagie buns
Instructions
- Prepare: Slice the chicken breasts into thin strips. Cut the green bell peppers into long strips, slice the yellow onion into half rings, and chop the mushrooms into bite-sized pieces.
- Sautee Vegetables: Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they turn golden brown, then remove and set aside. In the same skillet, sauté the bell peppers until golden and tender, then set aside. Repeat the process with the mushrooms, cooking them until soft and golden, then set aside.
- Cook Chicken: Using the same skillet, cook the sliced chicken over medium-high heat until golden brown and fully cooked through. Return the sautéed vegetables to the skillet with the chicken. Season the mixture evenly with salt and black pepper, stirring to combine all the flavors.
- Top with Cheese: Layer slices of provolone cheese over the chicken and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Reduce heat to very low and allow the cheese to melt completely, creating a gooey, rich topping.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Fill each hoagie bun generously with the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture. Serve immediately while the cheese is still melted and enjoy your hearty Chicken Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of smoked paprika to the chicken while cooking.
- Use fresh hoagie buns from your bakery for the best sandwich experience.
- If you prefer, substitute provolone with mozzarella or American cheese for a different taste.
- To make the sandwich spicier, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce.
- This recipe can be prepared ahead; just reheat gently to melt the cheese before serving.
