Ingredients
Pie Filling
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs (beaten)
- 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
- 5 ounces evaporated milk (1 small can)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Pie Crust
- 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
Optional Topping
- Whipped cream
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the pie.
- Prepare the Pie Crust: Roll out your pie crust and carefully place it into a 9-inch pie pan. Press the crust firmly against the edges of the pan and crimp the top rim to create a decorative edge.
- Make the Filling: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar until fully blended. Gradually add the beaten eggs, melted unsalted butter, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract. Stir the mixture thoroughly until smooth and uniform in consistency.
- Fill and Bake: Pour the chocolate filling into the prepared unbaked pie crust. Place the pie in the oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the top has formed a firm crust and is mostly set, though it should still have a slight jiggle when gently shaken.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, slice and serve. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top if desired for extra creaminess and sweetness.
Notes
- The pie will have a slight jiggle when done baking but will firm up as it cools completely.
- Using a well-chilled pie crust can help maintain flakiness after baking.
- Evaporated milk adds richness and creaminess to this classic Southern dessert.
- For a deeper chocolate flavor, use Dutch-processed cocoa powder if available.
- Whipped cream is optional but highly recommended to balance the dense chocolate filling.
