  • Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 24 servings

Ingredients

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

  • ½ cup butter, melted and cooled slightly (1 stick, 113 grams)
  • ¾ cup light or dark brown sugar (160 grams)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (50 grams)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1¾ cup all-purpose flour (210 grams)
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 cup bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided

Brownie Batter

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks, 226 grams)
  • 1 cup bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate chips (170 grams)
  • 1½ cup granulated sugar (300 grams)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ cup all-purpose flour (180 grams)
  • ¼ teaspoon coarse salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving excess over the sides to easily lift the brownies out later.
  2. Make chocolate chip cookie dough: In a bowl, stir together melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until combined. Beat in the egg and egg yolk one at a time, mixing 30-60 seconds after each addition until the batter thickens and lightens. Stir in vanilla extract. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, stirring until dough comes together. Fold in chocolate chips, reserving a small handful for topping.
  3. Make brownie batter: In a saucepan over low heat, melt butter and chocolate chips together until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, then add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract. Add flour and salt, mixing by hand until no flour streaks remain.
  4. Assemble and bake: Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared pan. Scoop rounded tablespoons of cookie dough and gently press them into the brownie batter. Sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips over the tops. Bake for 35-45 minutes until cookies are golden and brownies are set but still fudgy in the center. Baking time varies based on your oven and preferred brownie texture.
  5. Cool and serve: Let the brownies cool completely at room temperature for a few hours or chill for about 30 minutes in the fridge before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use parchment paper for easy removal and cleaner cuts.
  • Baking time affects texture: less time yields fudgey brownies and chewy cookies; more time yields firmer, cakier results.
  • Allow brownies to cool well before slicing to prevent crumbling.
  • Bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate chips work best for balanced sweetness.
  • For easier portioning of cookie dough, use a cookie scoop.
