Sweet and sugary homemade Puppy Chow is an irresistible snack made by coating Rice Chex cereal in a rich blend of chocolate, peanut butter, and butter, then dusting with powdered sugar. This easy-to-make treat is perfect for parties and holidays, offering a delicious mix of crunchy and chocolatey flavors in every bite.

  • Total Time: 7 minutes
  • Yield: 18 servings

Ingredients

Chocolate Mixture

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup salted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cereal and Coating

  • 6 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 ½ to 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chocolate Mixture: Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1 minute, then stir. Return the bowl to the microwave and heat for an additional 30 seconds or until the mixture becomes smooth when stirred. Add the vanilla extract and stir thoroughly to combine.
  2. Coat the Cereal: Pour the Rice Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl. Add the warm chocolate peanut butter mixture and gently stir the cereal until each piece is evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.
  3. Add Powdered Sugar: Transfer the coated cereal into a large Ziploc plastic bag. Add the powdered sugar, seal the bag tightly, and shake vigorously until the cereal is well coated with the sugar.
  4. Set and Cool: Spread the coated cereal out onto parchment or waxed paper to let it cool and allow the chocolate coating to set completely.
  5. Store: Store the Puppy Chow in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. If your kitchen is warm, keep it refrigerated to maintain freshness and prevent melting.

Notes

  • Microwave cooking times may vary depending on the wattage of your microwave; adjust as needed to avoid burning.
  • You can substitute Rice Chex with Corn Chex or Wheat Chex based on preference.
  • For an extra flavor boost, consider adding a pinch of salt or a handful of mini chocolate chips or nuts to the cereal before coating.
  • Make sure the coated cereal cools completely before storing to prevent clumping.
