Ingredients
Tofu
- 1 (14 to 16 ounce) block of soft or silken tofu
Sauce
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 1/2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon sugar (optional)
Toppings
- 3 to 4 tablespoons fried onions or fried shallots
- 2 tablespoons thinly sliced scallions
- 1 1/2 teaspoons toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
- Drain and prep tofu: Remove the block of tofu from its plastic tray and place it on a chopping block or plate to allow it to release some of its moisture.
- Prepare garlic vinegar sauce: Using a microplane zester, grate 2 cloves of garlic into a small bowl. Mix the grated garlic with 2 teaspoons of rice vinegar and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Then add 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 1/2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce, and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Taste the sauce and add 1/4 teaspoon sugar if you prefer a slightly sweeter, less tangy flavor.
- Crush fried onions: Gently crush 3 to 4 tablespoons of fried onions or fried shallots using a mortar and pestle or your hands to break them into smaller pieces.
- Assemble the tofu dish: Place the tofu carefully in a shallow serving bowl. Drizzle about two-thirds of the prepared sauce evenly over the tofu, reserving the rest to drizzle while eating.
- Add toppings: Sprinkle the crushed fried onions, thinly sliced scallions, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of toasted sesame seeds over the tofu. Save some scallions and fried onions on the side to add as you enjoy each bite.
- Serve: Use a large spoon to serve the cold tofu. This dish pairs wonderfully with jasmine, brown, basmati, or egg fried rice.
Notes
- Use soft or silken tofu for the best texture in this dish.
- Rice vinegar provides the essential tang; avoid substituting with other vinegars which may alter the flavor.
- Teriyaki sauce adds sweetness and depth; you can substitute with a mild sweet soy sauce if needed.
- Fried onions or shallots add crunch and texture; you can find these pre-made or make your own.
- Adjust the sugar in the sauce to balance the sharpness to your taste.
