Ingredients
For the Cranberry Sauce
- ½ cup fresh or frozen cranberries
- 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar (adjust to preferred sweetness)
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
- ½ cup water
For the Crostini
- ¼ baguette, thinly sliced on a diagonal into 6 pieces
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 tablespoons cream cheese
- 1 teaspoon honey
- Fresh thyme leaves
- Pinch of salt (optional, to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baguette: Preheat your oven to 360°F (180°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Thinly slice the baguette diagonally into 6 pieces. Brush both sides of each crostini slice lightly with olive oil to ensure crispness and golden color during baking.
- Bake Crostini: Place the prepared baguette slices on the lined baking sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes or until they turn light golden brown and are crisp. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool completely to retain their crunchiness.
- Make Cranberry Compote: In a medium-sized pan, combine the cranberries, brown sugar, cinnamon (if using), and water. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cranberries break down and the mixture thickens into a syrupy compote. Remove from heat and allow it to cool.
- Assemble Crostini: Spread a generous layer of cream cheese evenly over each cooled crostini slice. Top with a spoonful of the cooled cranberry compote. Drizzle with honey for a touch of sweetness, then sprinkle fresh thyme leaves on top. Add a pinch of salt if desired to balance the flavors.
- Serve: Arrange the finished crostini on a serving platter and serve immediately for the best texture. These crostini make an impressive and delicious appetizer for holiday parties or any festive occasion.
Notes
- For best results, slice the baguette thinly but not too thin to ensure sturdy crostini that hold toppings well.
- Adjust the brown sugar quantity in the cranberry compote to suit your preferred sweetness level.
- The cinnamon is optional but adds a warm holiday flavor to the cranberry sauce.
- Fresh thyme adds a lovely herbal note, but you can substitute with rosemary or omit if preferred.
- These crostini are best enjoyed the same day to maintain the crispiness of the bread.
