Ingredients
Wonton Filling
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 teaspoons minced chives (optional)
Wonton Wrappers and Assembly
- 24 wonton wrappers
- 1 egg, beaten (for sealing)
Frying
- Oil for frying (enough to fill 4 inches in a deep pan)
Instructions
- Prepare the cream cheese filling: In a bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sugar, and onion powder. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and evenly mixed.
- Assemble the wontons: Lay a wonton wrapper flat on a clean surface. Place about a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center. Brush the edges of the wrapper with the beaten egg to help seal it.
- Fold the wontons: Bring two opposite corners of the wrapper together in the middle and pinch to seal. Then, bring the remaining two opposite corners together in the center and pinch firmly to form a neat package shape.
- Repeat filling and folding: Continue filling, brushing, and folding the remaining wonton wrappers until all the cream cheese mixture is used.
- Heat the oil: Pour enough oil into a deep pan to reach about 4 inches deep and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the wontons: Carefully place 5-6 wontons into the hot oil at a time. Fry them for 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure an even golden-brown color on all sides.
- Drain: Remove the fried wontons with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat the frying process with the remaining wontons.
- Serve: Sprinkle the cooked wontons with minced chives if desired and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Make sure the oil temperature is consistent at 350°F to avoid greasy or undercooked wontons.
- For a crispier texture, double-fry the wontons by frying them briefly a second time after draining.
- You can substitute chives with green onions or scallions for garnish.
- These wontons are best enjoyed fresh and hot; they may lose crispiness if stored too long.
- Use caution when frying to avoid oil splatters and burns.
