Ingredients
Filling Ingredients
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 10 oz mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 3/4 cup parmesan cheese, finely grated
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
- 1 large egg (for filling)
Pastry Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a large baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
- Sauté Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add finely diced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent, approximately 5 minutes.
- Cook Mushrooms and Garlic: Add sliced mushrooms and minced garlic to the skillet with onions. Stir well and cook until mushrooms are soft and browned, about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Create Creamy Filling: Reduce the heat to low. Stir in cream cheese, parmesan, oregano, salt, black pepper, and fresh parsley. Mix thoroughly until you achieve a smooth and creamy texture. Remove from heat.
- Incorporate Egg: Quickly stir in one whisked egg into the mushroom mixture to incorporate it fully and help bind the filling.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Remove puff pastry from the refrigerator and unroll onto a sheet of parchment paper. Visualize the pastry in thirds and cut approximately 8 equal diagonal strips along both long edges. Trim the top corners and make a small oval cut at the top center to form the braid’s shape.
- Assemble Braid: Spread the mushroom filling evenly down the center third of the pastry, leaving about a 1/2 inch (1 cm) space at the top and bottom edges. Fold the center pastry section over the filling. Then, fold the diagonal strips over one another alternately, creating a braided effect. Gently press the ends and edges to seal the pastry.
- Apply Egg Wash: Transfer the entire braid on the parchment paper onto the baking tray. Brush the top of the braid with the remaining whisked egg to give a glossy golden finish.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Cut into portions and serve warm.
Notes
- Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to make clean cuts in the puff pastry strips for easier braiding.
- Make sure the mushrooms are cooked well to release moisture before mixing with cream cheese to avoid soggy pastry.
- The small oval cut at the top of the pastry allows steam to escape for even baking.
- You can add other herbs or spices such as thyme or rosemary for additional flavor.
- Serve immediately for best texture, but leftovers can be reheated gently to preserve crispiness.
