Ingredients
Tofu and Coating
- 16 ounces extra firm tofu, cubed into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons corn starch
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, divided (use vegan Worcestershire sauce for plant-based version)
Honey Garlic Sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 3 cloves garlic, pressed or finely minced
- 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds plus extra for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius) to prepare for baking the tofu.
- Prepare the Tofu: Cube the tofu into 1/2 inch bite-sized pieces. Place the tofu in a mixing bowl or a plastic bag for easy mixing.
- Coat the Tofu: Add 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and corn starch to the tofu. Mix thoroughly ensuring every piece is well coated with the seasoning and starch mixture.
- Prepare the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet pan with parchment paper and drizzle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Spread the coated tofu pieces evenly on the sheet in a single layer.
- Bake the Tofu: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, flip each tofu piece to ensure even crisping and bake for another 20 minutes until golden and crispy.
- Make the Honey Garlic Sauce: While the tofu bakes, combine the remaining Worcestershire sauce, honey, minced garlic, chili flakes, and sesame seeds in a sauce pan. Heat gently while stirring continuously until all ingredients are well combined and aromatic.
- Toss Tofu with Sauce: Once the tofu is baked and crispy, transfer it to a bowl. Pour the warm honey garlic sauce over the tofu and toss gently to coat every piece evenly.
- Serve: Serve the crispy honey garlic tofu over rice, lo mein noodles, or roasted vegetables. Garnish with extra sesame seeds, sliced green onions, or fresh herbs if desired for added flavor and visual appeal.
Notes
- Use extra firm tofu to achieve the best crispy texture; press the tofu if needed to remove excess moisture before cubing.
- For a vegan version, substitute traditional Worcestershire sauce with a vegan alternative and use maple syrup or agave instead of honey.
- Flipping the tofu midway through baking ensures even crispness on all sides.
- Chili flakes can be adjusted or omitted depending on your spice preference.
- This recipe can be served as a main dish or added to salads and bowls for extra protein and flavor.
