4.3 from 1 review

This Crockpot Mashed Potatoes recipe offers a hands-off approach to creamy, flavorful mashed potatoes. Using a slow cooker, potatoes are gently cooked until tender, then mixed with butter, heavy cream, and sour cream for a rich, smooth texture. Perfect for effortless holiday meals or comforting weeknight dinners.

  • Total Time: 6 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Potatoes and Liquids

  • 6 pounds potatoes, peeled and diced into 1-inch cubes
  • 3 cups water, or chicken broth

Dairy and Seasonings

  • 1½ sticks butter (12 tablespoons), divided, at room temperature
  • 1 cup heavy cream, at room temperature
  • 1½ cups sour cream, at room temperature
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare Potatoes: Peel the potatoes and chop them into 1/2 to 1-inch cubes, ensuring the pieces are uniform in size to cook evenly. Place the diced potatoes into the bottom of a 7-quart or larger crockpot.
  2. Add Liquids and Butter: Pour 3 cups (24 ounces) of water or chicken broth over the potatoes. Dot the potatoes with half a stick (4 tablespoons) of butter and generously season with salt and black pepper. It’s okay if the potatoes are not fully submerged in the liquid.
  3. Cook Potatoes: Cover the crockpot and cook on low heat for 6 to 7 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours. The potatoes are done when they are easily pierced with a fork, indicating tenderness.
  4. Drain Excess Liquid: Carefully drain any remaining liquid from the crockpot to prevent watery mashed potatoes.
  5. Add Dairy and Mash: Add the room-temperature sour cream, heavy cream, and the remaining butter to the potatoes in the crockpot. Mash using a potato masher for a chunkier texture or a potato ricer for a smoother consistency.
  6. Season and Adjust: Taste the mashed potatoes and add additional salt, black pepper, or more dairy ingredients such as butter, cream, or sour cream for extra richness and creaminess. Mix well before serving.

Notes

  • Using chicken broth instead of water adds extra flavor to the potatoes.
  • Room temperature dairy ensures smoother blending and creamier mashed potatoes.
  • If you prefer extra creamy mashed potatoes, gradually add more heavy cream or sour cream until desired consistency is reached.
  • This recipe is ideal for a large crowd, but leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
  • For a smoother texture, use a potato ricer or food mill instead of a masher.
  • Adding garlic or fresh herbs can customize the flavor profile to your liking.
