Ingredients
Cake Base
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- ¼ cup melted butter
Pudding Layer
- 1 box (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding mix
- 2 cups whole milk
Toppings
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup melted butter
- Remaining 11 oz evaporated milk (approximate from 12 oz can minus 1 cup used in batter)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional
- Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or butter to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups of whole milk until the mixture thickens. Let it rest for about 5 minutes to fully set.
- Mix the Cake Base: In a separate bowl, combine the dry chocolate cake mix with 1 cup of evaporated milk and ¼ cup melted butter. Stir until a thick, wet batter forms. Spread this batter evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Add the Pudding Layer: Carefully spread the thickened pudding over the wet cake batter, ensuring the entire surface is covered evenly using a spatula.
- Sprinkle the Chocolate Chips: Evenly distribute 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips over the pudding layer to add burst of melted chocolate throughout the cake.
- Create the Liquid Topping: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining evaporated milk (about ¾ cup), ½ cup brown sugar, ½ cup melted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Slowly pour this mixture over the layers in the baking dish, drizzling evenly so all parts are saturated.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The top should puff up and become set while the center remains soft and molten. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with optional whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for added decadence.
Notes
- Be careful not to overbake to maintain the gooey, molten center texture.
- You can substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with dark or milk chocolate chips depending on your sweetness preference.
- Using whole milk in the pudding ensures rich, creamy texture; skim milk can be substituted for a lighter version.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving to let the layers set properly but still enjoy the gooey warmth.
- This dessert can be made ahead and reheated gently before serving.
