Ingredients
Potatoes
- 2 pounds frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed
Cheese Sauce
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated
Garnish
- Fresh chopped parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking and set it aside.
- Spread Potatoes: Evenly spread the thawed shredded hash brown potatoes in your prepared baking dish to form a uniform layer.
- Make Cheese Sauce: In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, combine whole milk, heavy cream, dry mustard, kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, and black pepper. Stir frequently to ensure the mixture heats evenly without scorching.
- Melt Cheese: Once the mixture is warm, gradually add the freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese, stirring continuously until all the cheese melts and the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
- Combine and Bake: Pour the smooth cheese sauce evenly over the layer of potatoes in the baking dish. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the dish is bubbly.
- Garnish and Serve: After baking, remove from the oven and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serve warm as a comforting side dish.
Notes
- Thaw the frozen hash browns completely to ensure even cooking and prevent excess moisture in the dish.
- Use freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor and smooth melting texture.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper, depending on your cheese’s saltiness.
- For a crustier top, you can broil the potatoes for the last 2-3 minutes carefully watching to avoid burning.
- This dish can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated before baking. Bake just before serving for best results.
