Dried Orange Slices are a delightful, naturally sweet garnish or snack made by slowly dehydrating thin slices of navel oranges in the oven. Perfect for adding a burst of citrus flavor to drinks, desserts, or holiday decorations, these vibrant slices are easy to prepare at home using low-temperature baking to preserve their bright color and tangy taste.

  • Total Time: 4 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: 36 slices

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 3 navel oranges (preferably very firm)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 175°F. If your oven has a convection feature, use it to help dry the orange slices faster and more evenly.
  2. Prepare baking pans: Line two large baking pans with parchment paper. Place a wire rack on top of each lined pan. If you don’t have wire racks that fit, you can bake the slices directly on parchment but it will take longer.
  3. Slice the oranges: Cut the 3 navel oranges into thin slices. Discard the ends where the slices are mostly pith. Each orange should yield about 12 slices, filling the two 12×17-inch pans perfectly.
  4. Remove excess juice: Lay the orange slices between layers of paper towels and gently press to absorb as much juice as possible, which helps reduce baking time.
  5. Arrange and bake initial round: Place the orange slices evenly on the wire racks and bake for 1 hour. Then flip the slices and bake for another hour. Flip once more and bake for a final hour, totaling 3 hours.
  6. Check for dryness: After 3 hours, inspect the slices. Transfer fully dried slices to a plate. Flip any slices that look plump or sticky and bake for an additional 30 minutes.
  7. Continue drying: Repeat checking every 30 minutes, removing dried slices each time and returning any sticky slices to the oven until all are fully dried. Note that baking directly on parchment or using a non-convection oven might add 1-2 hours to total baking time.
  8. Use the dried slices: Once dried, use the orange slices as decorative garnishes for drinks or desserts, or as festive décor.

Notes

  • Using a convection oven speeds up the drying process and ensures even drying.
  • If wire racks are not available, baking directly on parchment paper is an option but will extend baking time by 1-2 hours.
  • Pressing excess juice out of the orange slices before baking helps reduce drying time and prevents sogginess.
  • Keep a close eye during the final drying stages to avoid over-drying or burning.
  • Dried orange slices can be stored in an airtight container for several weeks.
  • Perfect for holiday decorations, cocktail garnishes, and adding natural citrus aroma to your home.
