This easy sugar cookie recipe yields soft and chewy cookies with lightly crisp edges and a rich buttery flavor. Perfect for a quick treat, these cookies can be enjoyed plain or decorated with frosting or colored sugar for added fun.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 24 cookies

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), at room temperature
  • 1¼ cups granulated sugar, plus more for rolling (optional)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, sea salt, and baking powder until evenly combined.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: Using a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the unsalted butter and granulated sugar on medium speed until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the whole egg, egg yolk, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Mix until fully combined, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to ensure even mixing.
  5. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients while mixing on low speed. Continue mixing just until the flour is incorporated and no dry patches remain.
  6. Portion Dough: Using a 2-tablespoon cookie scoop, drop the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing each scoop at least 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. For extra sweetness and crunch, roll each dough ball in additional granulated sugar before placing on the baking sheet.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake one sheet at a time in the preheated oven for 10 to 11 minutes. The cookies should be puffed, spread out on the baking sheet, and just beginning to turn golden brown around the edges.
  8. Cool: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature butter to ensure a smooth creaming process and tender cookies.
  • Rolling the cookie dough balls in granulated sugar before baking gives the cookies a crunchy, sweet exterior.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days for maximum freshness.
  • Feel free to decorate with frosting or colored sugar for festive occasions.
