Celebrate Independence Day with these festive Fourth of July Rice Krispies treats. Vibrantly colored in red and blue with a delicious marshmallow and butter base, these no-bake treats are topped with patriotic sprinkles and joined together with creamy white frosting to create fun, star-shaped sandwiches perfect for summer parties and family gatherings.

  • Total Time: 58 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Marshmallow Mixture

  • 8 tablespoons Unsalted Butter, sliced
  • 12 cups Mini Marshmallows
  • Blue Food Coloring (a few drops)
  • Red Food Coloring (a few drops)

Main Ingredient

  • 8 cups Rice Cereal

Decoration

  • 1 can White Frosting (16 ounces)
  • Red, White, and Blue Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Separate Ingredients: Divide the marshmallows and butter into two equal halves. Place each half in separate large microwave-safe bowls to create two color portions.
  2. Microwave Mixtures: Microwave one bowl for 1-2 minutes or until the marshmallows and butter have fully melted. Stir well. Repeat this process with the second bowl.
  3. Add Food Coloring: Add red food coloring to one melted marshmallow mixture and blue food coloring to the other. Mix each thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed.
  4. Combine Cereal: Fold half the rice cereal into the red marshmallow mixture and the other half into the blue marshmallow mixture, mixing until fully combined.
  5. Prepare Pans: Spray two 9×13-inch baking dishes with nonstick cooking spray. Spread the red mixture evenly in one dish and the blue mixture in the other. Spray your hands with cooking spray and press the cereal treats down evenly to cover each pan.
  6. Decorate and Set: Sprinkle patriotic red, white, and blue sprinkles on top of each color layer. Let the treats sit at room temperature for 40 minutes or until completely set.
  7. Cut Shapes: Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut star shapes from the set rice krispie treats in each color.
  8. Assemble Stars: Place white frosting in a zip lock bag and snip a small corner off the end. Pipe a small amount of frosting onto the back (un-sprinkled side) of a red or blue star, then sandwich it with a star of the opposite color, frosting side in the middle, creating a patriotic red, white, and blue star treat. Repeat with remaining pieces.

Notes

  • Use non-stick cooking spray generously on hands and pans to prevent sticking.
  • Adjust the amount of food coloring depending on desired color intensity.
  • Press the mixture firmly into pans for easier cutting and cleaner shapes.
  • Let treats set fully to ensure they hold shape when cut.
  • Store assembled treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free rice cereal.
