Crispy and golden Funnel Cake Fries are a delightful twist on the classic carnival treat. Made with a simple batter of flour, eggs, sugar, and milk, these fries are fried to perfection and served hot with a dusting of powdered sugar and your favorite sweet toppings. Perfect for a fun snack or dessert that brings fairground flavors right to your kitchen.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying & Serving

  • Vegetable oil or shortening (for frying), enough to fill oil to 1½ to 2 inches in depth
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Optional toppings: granulated sugar, whipped cream, sliced strawberries, strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce

Instructions

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and granulated sugar until well blended and free of lumps.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the eggs, whole milk, and vanilla extract until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Make Batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, whisking continuously to form a smooth batter with no lumps.
  4. Prepare for Frying: Transfer the batter into a squeeze bottle, piping bag, or a plastic bag with a small corner snipped off for easy piping.
  5. Heat Oil: In a deep-sided skillet, pour vegetable oil to a depth of 1½ to 2 inches and heat it to 350°F (175°C), ensuring it reaches the correct temperature for frying.
  6. Fry Funnel Cake Fries: Squeeze the batter into hot oil in straight lines, using your finger or scissors to cut the batter stream, creating multiple fries. Fry as many as fit comfortably in the oil without overcrowding.
  7. Cook Until Golden: Fry the batter lines until the bottom side turns golden brown, about 20 to 30 seconds. Flip each fry carefully and cook until the other side is also golden.
  8. Drain Excess Oil: Remove the cooked funnel cake fries using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  9. Repeat Frying: Continue piping and frying the remaining batter until all fries are cooked.
  10. Serve: Serve the funnel cake fries hot, dusted generously with powdered sugar. Add optional toppings like granulated sugar, whipped cream, sliced strawberries, strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, or chocolate sauce as desired for added sweetness and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature is consistent at 350°F to achieve crispy fries without being greasy.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet to maintain oil temperature and ensure even cooking.
  • Use a deep-sided skillet or pot to prevent oil splatters and for safe frying.
  • For a lighter option, try using vegetable shortening, which can sometimes yield a crisper texture.
  • Customize your toppings to suit your taste, from classic powdered sugar to decadent sauces.
