Ingredients
Bread
- 1 loaf Italian bread
- ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
Sloppy Joe Filling
- 1 pound ground beef
- ¼ cup yellow onion, chopped
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- ¾ cup (180 g) ketchup
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup water
Topping
- 1 cup (113 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 cup (113 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- Parsley, chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice the Italian bread lengthwise into two halves and place them cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
- Make Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic salt. Spread this garlic butter generously over the cut sides of the bread, setting them aside to prepare the sloppy joe filling.
- Cook Sloppy Joe Filling: Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped yellow onion, cooking until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess grease from the skillet to reduce fat.
- Season Filling: Stir in garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water into the browned beef mixture. Mix well until everything is combined and heated through.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over both halves of the garlic buttered bread. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese evenly on top of the sloppy joe filling.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the assembled garlic bread sloppy joes for 12-14 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown on top.
- Serve: Remove from oven, cut into pieces, and garnish with chopped parsley before serving warm for a hearty and flavorful meal.
Notes
- Use Italian bread for a sturdy base that toasts well and holds the filling without getting soggy.
- Drain the cooked beef mixture well to prevent greasy sloppy joes.
- Feel free to use other cheese blends or add a bit of spicy mustard for extra flavor.
- Garnish with parsley for a fresh pop of color and mild herbal notes.
- To make it a little healthier, you can use ground turkey or lean beef instead of regular ground beef.
