Ingredients
BBQ Sauce
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 medium clove garlic, crushed into a paste
Salmon and Broccoli
- 1-1/2 lbs salmon, skin removed and cut into 4 equal pieces
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- Kosher salt and pepper to taste
- 1-1/2 lbs fresh broccoli, cut into 1-inch florets
- Sliced green onions for topping
Instructions
- Make the BBQ Sauce: Combine ketchup, light brown sugar, honey (or agave), apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic paste in a medium saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sauce is bubbly and slightly thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
- Season the Sauce: Remove the sauce from heat and taste. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper as needed. Set aside to cool while you prepare the salmon and broccoli.
- Prepare Salmon: Rub the salmon fillets on all sides with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Season generously with salt and pepper to enhance flavor.
- Toss Broccoli: In a small bowl, toss broccoli florets with the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 2 tablespoons of the prepared BBQ sauce. Add salt and pepper to taste, ensuring the broccoli is well coated.
- Preheat Grill or Pan: Heat an outdoor grill to 400°F (204°C). If you don’t have a grill, lightly grease and preheat a large nonstick pan on the stovetop over medium-high heat.
- Grill Salmon: Place the salmon fillets on a sheet of nonstick foil on the grill or directly in the nonstick pan. Brush frequently with BBQ sauce and cook for approximately 6-9 minutes, turning once until the salmon is golden brown and reaches an internal temperature of 125-130°F for medium doneness.
- Cook Broccoli: Grill the broccoli on a sheet of nonstick foil or in a grill basket alongside the salmon, or cook in a separate large skillet if indoors. Toss occasionally to ensure even charring and tenderness, cooking for about 6-9 minutes until lightly charred.
- Finish and Serve: Drizzle the cooked salmon and broccoli with a few more spoonfuls of BBQ sauce. Sprinkle with sliced green onions for a fresh garnish. Serve warm and enjoy your flavorful grilled BBQ salmon and broccoli!
Notes
- Salmon is best served medium with an internal temperature of 125-130°F to remain moist and tender.
- If you do not have a grill, a stovetop pan works well for both salmon and broccoli.
- Use nonstick foil or a grill basket to prevent delicate salmon and broccoli from falling through grates.
- Adjust the sweetness of the BBQ sauce by varying the amount of brown sugar or honey to suit your taste.
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the BBQ sauce while simmering.
- Ensure broccoli florets are cut into uniform size for even cooking.
