- 6 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
- 2 teaspoons ginger paste
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- ½ teaspoon ground white pepper (or black pepper)
- Kosher salt, to taste
Vegetables & Cooking Fats
- 3 medium carrots, thinly cut on a bias
- 2 medium zucchinis, sliced in half lengthwise & then cut into half moons
- 4-5 ounces sliced baby bella mushrooms
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
Steak Cooking Additions
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1-2 tablespoons teriyaki sauce or Japanese BBQ sauce (Bachan’s recommended)
For Serving
- Fried rice
- Store-bought Yum Yum Sauce
Instructions
- Prep & marinate steak: Place the sirloin chunks into a large bowl or plastic bag. Add mirin, minced garlic, ginger paste, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, ground white or black pepper, and salt to taste. Toss everything together until the steak is fully coated with the marinade. Set aside for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
- Sauté veggies: Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the sliced carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms. Stir frequently and cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until the vegetables are tender and golden brown. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Transfer the cooked vegetables to a separate plate and set aside. Wipe the pan clean with a damp paper towel if needed.
- Cook steak: In the same pan, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon sesame oil over medium-high heat. When hot, add the marinated steak chunks. Cook while tossing often for about 3 to 4 minutes, searing the beef nicely but avoiding overcooking to preserve tenderness. Remove from heat and drizzle with 1 to 2 tablespoons teriyaki or Japanese BBQ sauce. Toss thoroughly to coat the steak chunks evenly with the glaze.
- Build the bowls & serve: Evenly divide the cooked steak and sautéed vegetables into shallow bowls alongside a portion of fried rice. Drizzle each bowl with store-bought Yum Yum Sauce, or serve the sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your flavorful homemade hibachi steak bowls!
Notes
- Allow the steak to marinate for at least 30 minutes to maximize flavor absorption.
- Use a wok or large skillet for even cooking and easy tossing of ingredients.
- Adjust teriyaki sauce quantity according to desired sweetness and glaze coverage.
- Yum Yum Sauce can be substituted with spicy mayo or another creamy dipping sauce if preferred.
- Serve immediately for best taste and texture; leftover steak may become tough if reheated excessively.
