Ingredients
Sausage Mixture
- 1 pound sweet or spicy ground sausage
Cheese Mixture
- 16 ounces sour cream
- 4 ounces softened cream cheese
- 8 ounces cheese cut into small cubes (such as cheddar or your choice)
- 6 ounces shredded or chopped muenster cheese
Seasonings and Garnish
- 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon ground sage
- 2 tablespoons sliced green onions, more for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 2-quart baking dish or pie dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
- Cook sausage: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground sausage and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, for 5-6 minutes until no pink remains. Drain off excess fat, then transfer the cooked sausage to a small bowl and set aside.
- Prepare cheese mixture: In a large bowl, combine softened cream cheese and sour cream. Using a hand mixer, beat until smooth and fully combined.
- Add cheeses and seasonings: To the bowl, add the cubed cheese, shredded or chopped muenster cheese, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, ground sage, and sliced green onions. Beat the mixture again until all ingredients are well incorporated.
- Combine sausage and cheese mixture: Fold the cooked sausage into the cheese mixture gently to distribute evenly.
- Bake the dip: Transfer the combined mixture into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the top evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes until the edges are bubbling and the top has browned slightly.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with additional sliced green onions if desired, and serve warm with tortilla chips, crackers, or crusty bread.
Notes
- You can customize the cheese blend by substituting cheddar, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack for the cubed cheese.
- Adjust the sausage type and spice level based on your preference – hot, sweet, or mild sausage all work well.
- Use a good quality nonstick spray or lightly grease the baking dish to avoid sticking.
- Make sure to drain the cooked sausage well to prevent excess grease in the dip.
- For a smoother texture, finely chop the muenster or shred it before adding to the mixture.
- Serve immediately for the best warm, gooey texture, or reheat gently if needed.
