This Homemade Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Pasta Skillet is a quick and easy dinner solution perfect for busy weeknights. Made with browned lean ground beef, a flavorful blend of spices, creamy cheddar cheese, and cavatappi or macaroni pasta, it’s a satisfying and comforting meal that the whole family will love. Ready in just 15 minutes, it’s a delicious homemade alternative to pre-packaged boxed meals.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meat and Spices

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Liquids and Pasta

  • 2 cups hot water (or beef broth or chicken broth)
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups dry cavatappi pasta or macaroni noodles

Cheese

  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it up using a meat chopper, wooden spatula, or spoon. Cook, stirring regularly, until the meat is fully browned with no pink remaining. Drain any excess fat from the pan to ensure a less greasy sauce.
  2. Add Spices and Liquids: Sprinkle the cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, sugar, and black pepper evenly over the browned beef. Stir well to coat the meat with the seasoning. Then, pour in the hot water, milk, and add the dry pasta. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  3. Simmer the Pasta: Once boiling, cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it cook for 8 to 11 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente and has absorbed most of the liquid. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  4. Melt the Cheese: Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the cooked pasta and meat mixture. Stir thoroughly until the cheese fully melts into a creamy sauce.
  5. Rest and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and allow the dish to stand for a few minutes. This resting time thickens the sauce. Optionally, garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving to add a fresh touch.

Notes

  • You can substitute hot water with beef or chicken broth for enhanced flavor.
  • Use cavatappi pasta for the authentic texture, but macaroni works as a great substitute.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper.
  • For a lighter version, use low-fat milk and lean ground beef.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
