This rich and creamy Hot Fudge Sauce is the perfect indulgent topping for ice cream and desserts. Made with unsalted butter, bittersweet chocolate, evaporated milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla, it comes together in just 10 minutes on the stovetop. The sauce has a luscious, thick texture and deep chocolate flavor, making it an irresistible classic treat.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 4 ounces bittersweet baking chocolate (or ⅔ cup semisweet chocolate chips)
  • 8 ounces evaporated milk (or half and half)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (depending on desired chocolate intensity)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and chocolate: In a small or medium saucepan over medium low heat, melt the unsalted butter and bittersweet baking chocolate (or semisweet chocolate chips), stirring frequently to prevent burning and to combine the ingredients smoothly.
  2. Add milk: Once the chocolate and butter have fully melted, slowly whisk in the evaporated milk or half and half until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  3. Add dry ingredients: Whisk in the granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt until all the dry ingredients are fully incorporated into the chocolate mixture.
  4. Bring to a boil: Keep the saucepan over medium low heat, whisking frequently. Let the mixture cook for 5 to 6 minutes until it just starts coming to a boil. Then reduce the heat slightly and simmer for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, stirring continuously to prevent sticking or scorching.
  5. Add vanilla: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract thoroughly to enhance the flavor of the hot fudge sauce.
  6. Serve or store: Serve the hot fudge warm over ice cream or your favorite dessert. Alternatively, allow it to cool, transfer to a heat-safe jar or container, and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Reheat gently before using if desired.

Notes

  • Use bittersweet chocolate for a richer, more intense fudge flavor, or semisweet chocolate for a slightly sweeter sauce.
  • Adjust the amount of cocoa powder between 6 to 8 tablespoons depending on how chocolatey you want the sauce.
  • The sauce thickens as it cools; reheat gently to loosen before serving.
  • Store refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
  • Perfect topping for ice cream, brownies, cakes, or fruit.
