Ingredients
Eggs
- 12 hard-boiled eggs, room temperature, dry
Dye Mixture (per color)
- ½ cup boiling water
- ½ tablespoon white distilled vinegar
- 10-20 drops food dye (adjust quantity for color intensity)
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil, plus extra for oil streaks on eggs
Instructions
- Prepare the Dye: Use one mixing bowl per color. Add ½ cup boiling water, ½ tablespoon white distilled vinegar, and 10-20 drops of food dye to each bowl. Stir well until the color is evenly mixed. Use fewer drops for darker colors and more for lighter colors to achieve the desired shade.
- Add Oil: Mix 1 tablespoon of cooking oil into each dye bowl, reserving a small amount of oil separately for later use. The oil will help create the marbled effect by floating on top of the dye.
- Oil the Eggs: Lightly streak a small amount of oil onto each hard-boiled egg using your finger or a brush. Be sure not to cover the entire egg; this uneven application helps form the marbled patterns when dyeing.
- Dye the Eggs: Stir the dye and oil mixture quickly to distribute the oil around the surface. Then roll or gently dip each egg in the dye plus oil mixture briefly—just a moment—to allow the marbled patterns to form. Remove the egg immediately and pat it dry with a paper towel.
- Dry: Place the decorated eggs in an egg carton or on a drying rack and let them sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to dry thoroughly before handling or displaying.
Notes
- Use gloves to prevent staining your hands with food dye.
- Make sure eggs are completely dry before applying oil for best marbling effect.
- Adjust food dye amounts based on color preference and intensity.
- The marbling effect is created by the oil floating on the surface, so don’t over-stir the dye before dyeing eggs.
- Use room temperature, hard-boiled eggs to avoid cracking during the dye process.
