Ingredients
Meatballs and Sauce
- 1 recipe Italian meatballs (with marinara sauce)
Mashed Potatoes
- 1 recipe mashed potatoes
Additional Ingredients
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- Prepare mashed potatoes and meatballs: Prepare the mashed potatoes as per your favorite recipe or mine, ensuring they are creamy and smooth. Prepare the Italian meatballs along with the marinara sauce from your chosen recipe, cooking them through completely.
- Preheat oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to warm up while you assemble the casserole.
- Prepare casserole dish: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking. A Le Creuset Braiser or similar oven-safe dish works well.
- Assemble casserole: Spread the prepared mashed potatoes evenly on the bottom of the casserole dish. Arrange the cooked meatballs with marinara sauce evenly on top of the mashed potatoes.
- Bake: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, allowing the casserole to heat through. Then remove from the oven, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the meatballs, and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and starts to brown.
- Serve: Garnish the baked casserole with freshly chopped parsley for color and freshness. Serve warm immediately for the best taste experience.
Notes
- You can prepare the meatballs and mashed potatoes a day ahead to save time during assembly.
- Use fresh mozzarella or part-skim for a lighter option if desired.
- For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese before baking.
- Ensure the meatballs are fully cooked before assembling the casserole to avoid undercooked meat.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
