Ingredients
Mushrooms:
- 1 Tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
- 2 Tablespoons salted butter
- ½ yellow onion, sliced thin
- 8 ounces baby bella or white mushrooms, washed and sliced
- 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 Tablespoon water
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon pepper
Burgers:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons seasoning salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, add canola oil and salted butter. Once the butter melts, add the sliced onions and cook for 3 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Add Mushrooms: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and sauté for an additional 4 minutes until both the onions and mushrooms are mostly softened.
- Prepare Mushroom Sauce: Stir in Dijon mustard, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 4-5 minutes to reduce the sauce and fully soften the vegetables. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Preheat Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high, aiming for a temperature between 375-400°F (190-204°C).
- Mix Burger Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning salt, pepper, and garlic powder using your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined.
- Form Patties: Divide the meat mixture into 4 equal portions. Shape each into patties slightly larger than the hamburger buns you plan to use.
- Grill Patties: Place the patties on the preheated grill and cook each side for 4-6 minutes depending on your preferred doneness. For medium-well, grill until the internal temperature reaches 150°F (65°C).
- Add Cheese: In the last 2-3 minutes of cooking, place a slice or two of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
- Assemble Burgers: Place each patty on a hamburger bun and top generously with the prepared sautéed mushrooms and onions. Add any desired condiments, then serve immediately.
Notes
- To keep burgers juicy, avoid overmixing the meat when combining ingredients.
- For extra flavor, consider toasting the buns lightly on the grill before assembling.
- Adjust the cooking time based on your preferred burger doneness and grill temperature.
- Swiss cheese pairs exceptionally well with mushrooms, but feel free to substitute with Gruyère or cheddar if desired.
