Not Yo’ Mama’s Banana Pudding is a creamy, layered Southern classic dessert featuring layers of Chessmen cookies, fresh bananas, and a rich vanilla pudding mixture blended with cream cheese and whipped topping. This indulgent pudding is chilled for a few hours to let the flavors meld, making it a perfect make-ahead treat for gatherings and celebrations.

  • Total Time: 3 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 2 (7.25 ounces) bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies

Dairy and Pudding

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 (5.1 ounce) box instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (Cool Whip)

Fruit

  • 6 – 8 medium bananas, sliced 1/2 inch thick

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pudding mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine milk and instant vanilla pudding mix. Using an electric hand mixer, blend on low speed until the mixture is thickened, approximately two minutes.
  2. Combine cream cheese and condensed milk: In a separate large mixing bowl, beat together softened cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk on medium-high speed until smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Fold in whipped topping: Gently fold the thawed whipped topping (Cool Whip) into the cream cheese mixture with a rubber spatula until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Combine pudding and cream cheese mixture: Transfer the pudding to the bowl containing the cream cheese and whipped topping mixture. Stir gently until everything is completely incorporated.
  5. Layer cookies: Line the bottom of a 9×13-inch casserole dish evenly with one bag of Chessmen cookies.
  6. Add banana layer: Place a layer of sliced bananas evenly over the cookies.
  7. Spread pudding mixture: Spoon the whipped cream and pudding mixture over the banana layer and smooth it out evenly with a rubber spatula.
  8. Top with cookies: Lay out the second bag of Chessmen cookies evenly over the pudding layer.
  9. Chill: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours to allow the pudding to set and flavors to meld; overnight chilling is ideal for best results.
  10. Serve: Scoop the banana pudding onto serving plates and enjoy this classic Southern dessert.

Notes

  • For best results, use ripe but firm bananas to avoid mushiness.
  • You can prepare this dessert a day ahead, as chilling enhances the flavor and texture.
  • If you prefer a less sweet pudding, consider reducing the amount of sweetened condensed milk slightly.
  • Use full-fat cream cheese and whipped topping for a richer taste.
  • Make sure to soften cream cheese to room temperature to avoid lumps.
  • Cover tightly with plastic wrap to prevent the pudding from absorbing refrigerator odors.
