Ingredients
For the Patties
- ½ pound ground chuck
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1½ tablespoons cooking oil
For the Onions and Assembly
- 1 large onion
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons water, or as needed
- 4 slices rye bread (or desired type of bread)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 slices Provolone cheese
- 2 slices Emmental cheese
Instructions
- Make the patties: Season the ground beef with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Shape into two patties, roughly the shape and size of the bread slices you will use.
- Cook the patties: Heat the cooking oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until fully cooked. Remove from skillet and keep covered on a plate to retain juices.
- Prepare onions and butter: Peel and thinly slice the onion into half-moons. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Caramelize the onions: Season onions with salt and pepper and cook for about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking, stirring often, until onions begin to brown. Add water as needed to prevent burning and scrape browned bits from the pan. Cook for about 20 minutes more until deeply caramelized. Stir in the reserved meat juices, then remove onions from skillet.
- Prepare the bread: Spread mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice. Place the bread slices mayonnaise side down into the skillet set over medium-high heat.
- Assemble and cook sandwiches: On two slices of the bread, top each with 2 slices of Provolone cheese, half the caramelized onions, and one cooked patty. Place one slice of Emmental cheese on top of each patty. Close the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices, mayonnaise side up. Cook sandwiches for 2-3 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese melts. Repeat for second sandwich.
- Serve: Slice each patty melt in half and serve warm immediately for best taste.
Notes
- You can substitute rye bread with sourdough or your preferred sandwich bread.
- Adjust the seasoning of the patties to your taste preference.
- Use low-fat or lighter cheese options if preferred for a healthier version.
- Adding a little garlic powder or Worcestershire sauce to the patties can enhance flavor.
- To keep patties juicy, avoid pressing down on them during cooking.
