These brown sugar pecan sugar cookies are soft and flavorful cookies made with brown sugar, topped with a simple vanilla glaze and chopped pecans. Perfect for Christmas baking or any cozy occasion, these cookies combine the warmth of cinnamon and the crunch of pecans in every bite.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 42 minutes
  • Yield: 24 Cookies

Ingredients

Cookie Dough:

  • 8 Tablespoons salted butter (1 stick), at room temperature
  • ½ Cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ Cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ Cup maple syrup
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ¼ Cups all-purpose flour, unbleached
  • ½ Teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ Teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ Teaspoon salt
  • 1 ¼ Cups pecans, chopped

Optional Glaze:

  • 1 Cup powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • Vanilla extract, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer to cream together the room temperature butter, light brown sugar, powdered sugar, and maple syrup until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  2. Add Vanilla and Egg: Add the vanilla extract and egg to the creamed mixture and continue mixing until fully incorporated. Set this mixture aside.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, salt, and chopped pecans until evenly mixed.
  4. Mix Dry Ingredients into Wet: Gradually add the dry flour mixture into the wet butter mixture, mixing well after each addition. The dough will be thick; use a Danish dough whisk or a sturdy mixing spoon to combine thoroughly.
  5. Chill Dough: Form the dough into a ball, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up and develop flavor.
  6. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  7. Roll Out Dough: Lightly flour your work surface, place the chilled dough on it, and roll out to about ¼ inch thickness. If the dough softens too much, divide it in half and keep the other half refrigerated.
  8. Cut Cookies: Use a round cookie cutter to cut shapes from the rolled dough and place the cut cookies onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
  9. Bake: Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are set and slightly golden.
  10. Cool Cookies: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking pan for 1 to 2 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  11. Repeat Baking: Repeat the rolling, cutting, and baking process with the remaining dough until all cookies are baked.
  12. Prepare Glaze (Optional): While the cookies cool, whisk together powdered sugar, milk or heavy cream, and vanilla extract to create a smooth glaze. Once cookies are cooled, drizzle or spread the glaze on top, then allow it to set before serving.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough helps control spreading and improves flavor.
  • Use parchment paper on your baking sheet for easier cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • If your kitchen is warm, keep unused dough refrigerated while rolling to maintain texture.
  • For a different flavor twist, you can substitute the pecans with walnuts or skip nuts altogether.
  • The glaze is optional but adds a lovely sweetness and decorative finish.
