Ingredients
Tapioca Pearls
- ½ cup quick-cook tapioca pearls
- 4 cups water (for cooking pearls)
Tea Base
- 3 black tea bags
- 1 cup hot water (for brewing tea)
Brown Sugar Syrup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons water (for syrup)
Assembly
- ½ cup whole milk
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar syrup (prepared)
- Ice cubes (optional)
Instructions
- Cook Tapioca Pearls: Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Add the quick-cook tapioca pearls and stir frequently to prevent sticking. Begin checking the pearls at the halfway point of the recommended cooking time; they should have a gummy bear-like chewy texture when done. Once cooked, immediately drain the pearls using a fine mesh strainer and shock them in cold water to stop the cooking process and maintain texture.
- Brew Strong Tea Base: Place 3 black tea bags into 1 cup of hot water and steep for 5-7 minutes to extract a strong tea flavor. Remove the tea bags and allow the brewed tea to cool completely before assembling your drink.
- Prepare Brown Sugar Syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons of brown sugar with 2 tablespoons of water. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens slightly into syrup. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Assemble Boba Tea: Spoon the cooked tapioca pearls into the bottom of tall glasses. Drizzle the brown sugar syrup over the warm pearls to infuse flavor. Pour the cooled strong black tea over the pearls, leaving space for the milk. Carefully add ½ cup of whole milk on top, then gently stir to combine.
- Serve: Add ice cubes if desired for a chilled beverage. Taste and adjust sweetness with additional syrup if preferred. Serve immediately with wide straws designed for tapioca pearls to enjoy the perfect texture and bubble tea experience.
Notes
- Use wide straws specifically made for bubble tea to enjoy tapioca pearls without clogging.
- Timing the cooking of pearls is critical for achieving the perfect chewy texture; check them frequently.
- Cooling the tea before assembly prevents the pearls from overcooking when mixed.
- Brown sugar syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 week.
- Enjoy immediately for the best texture; tapioca pearls harden and lose chewiness over time.
