This Queso Steak and Rice recipe features a flavorful combination of seasoned Spanish rice, tender sirloin steak cooked with aromatic spices, and rich, creamy queso cheese dip. Perfect for a satisfying Mexican-inspired dinner, the dish comes together with simple ingredients and straightforward cooking techniques for a deliciously hearty meal.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 5 servings

Ingredients

Spanish Rice:

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder

Steak and Toppings:

  • 1 pound sirloin steak, sliced to your liking
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 16 ounces Gordo’s queso cheese dip, original flavor
  • Chopped parsley or cilantro, for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Toast the rice and sauté aromatics: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 cup of rice and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the rice becomes slightly brown and toasty. Then add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and stir over medium-low heat for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Cook the rice: Pour in 2 cups of chicken broth and 8 ounces of tomato sauce, stirring until combined. Bring the mixture to a boil, then let it boil for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20 minutes without stirring.
  3. Cook the steak: While the rice cooks, heat 2 tablespoons of butter in another large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sirloin steak along with cumin, smoked paprika, onion powder, and chili powder. Stir to evenly coat the steak with seasonings and butter. Cook the steak to your preferred doneness, then remove from the skillet.
  4. Rest the rice: After 20 minutes of simmering, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for an additional 10 minutes to finish steaming.
  5. Assemble the dish: Fluff the rice with a fork and plate it. Top with the cooked sirloin steak slices. Warm the queso cheese dip and drizzle generously over the steak and rice. Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro if desired, and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use Gordo’s queso dip for authentic flavor, or substitute with your favorite queso cheese dip.
  • Slicing the steak thinly helps it cook evenly and quickly.
  • Letting the rice rest with the lid on is essential for fluffy rice.
  • Adjust spices to your taste preferences for more or less heat.
  • Serve with a side of fresh salsa or guacamole for extra flavor.
