Slow Cooker French Onion Meatballs are a comforting and hearty dish featuring tender beef meatballs simmered with caramelized onions in a rich French onion soup and beef broth mixture, finished with melted Gruyère cheese for a deliciously savory dinner.

  • Total Time: 6 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 3 lbs frozen meatballs (48 oz)

Onions & Sauce

  • 2 large yellow onions, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cans condensed French onion soup (10.5 oz each)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix or 1 tablespoon beef broth and 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Topping & Garnish

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish
  • Crispy fried onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sauce mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the condensed French onion soup, beef broth, brown gravy mix (or homemade slurry with beef broth and cornstarch), and Worcestershire sauce until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  2. Combine meatballs and sauce: Place the frozen meatballs and thinly sliced onions into the slow cooker. Pour the prepared liquid mixture over the meatballs and onions, gently stirring to ensure everything is coated evenly.
  3. Cook the meatballs: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW heat for 6 hours or on HIGH heat for 4 hours, until the onions become golden and tender and the meatballs are thoroughly heated through.
  4. Add the cheese topping: Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the cooked meatballs and onions. Cover again and let it sit for 5 minutes to allow the cheese to melt beautifully over the dish.
  5. Garnish and serve: Before serving, garnish the meatballs with fresh parsley and crispy fried onions for an added crunch and fresh flavor.

Notes

  • You can use homemade meatballs if preferred, but cooking times may need to be adjusted accordingly.
  • If you do not have brown gravy mix, a simple slurry made of cornstarch and beef broth works well as a thickener.
  • For a milder onion flavor, caramelize the onions on the stovetop before adding them to the slow cooker.
  • Serve these meatballs over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or crusty bread to soak up the flavorful sauce.
