Soutzoukakia Me Patates is a traditional Greek dish featuring flavorful spiced ground beef meatballs simmered alongside tender baked potato wedges in a rich tomato sauce. This cozy one-dish meal combines aromatic herbs such as mint, parsley, and oregano with cumin and garlic to create a comforting, hearty dinner perfect for family gatherings or weeknight meals.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

For the Soutzoukakia Meatballs

  • 340g ground beef (3/4 lb)
  • 3/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 medium onion (grated)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 3 tablespoons parsley (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint (chopped) or 1 teaspoon dried mint
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 lemon (juiced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Potato and Sauce

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 large potatoes (cut into wedges)
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Potatoes: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Drizzle a large baking dish with the olive oil, then add the potato wedges. Season with oregano, salt, and pepper, tossing them well to ensure an even coating.
  2. Par-Cook the Potatoes: Pour the tomato sauce and water over the potatoes in the baking dish. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes to begin cooking the potatoes and infuse them with flavor.
  3. Form the Soutzoukakia Meatballs: While the potatoes bake, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, grated onion, minced garlic, parsley, mint, ground cumin, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated. Then, shape the mixture into oval-shaped meatballs by scooping portions into your hands and molding them.
  4. Add Meatballs to Potatoes and Continue Baking: After the initial 30 minutes of baking, carefully place the soutzoukakia meatballs on top of the partially cooked potatoes in the baking dish. Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 50 to 60 minutes, until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the meatballs are cooked through.
  5. Flip and Coat During Baking: Halfway through this second baking period, gently flip both the potatoes and meatballs to ensure they are evenly coated with the tomato sauce, enhancing their flavor and moisture.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground lamb or a mixture of beef and pork for a richer flavor.
  • Fresh mint is preferred for the authentic taste, but dried mint works well too.
  • Be sure to flip the potatoes and meatballs halfway through baking to avoid sticking and to get even cooking.
  • Serve with crusty bread or a green salad for a complete meal.
  • Adjust seasoning to your taste, especially salt and pepper.
