Delightful and savory Spinach Artichoke Swirls made with flaky puff pastry filled with a creamy blend of fresh spinach, artichokes, parmesan cheese, and garlic. These swirled appetizers are baked to golden perfection, making them a perfect snack or party treat.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 swirls

Ingredients

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet

Filling

  • 1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
  • 1/4 cup artichokes, chopped
  • 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
  • 1/8 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cracked pepper to taste
  • Red pepper flakes to taste

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tsp water

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) and thaw one sheet of puff pastry according to package instructions.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped fresh spinach, chopped artichokes, shredded parmesan cheese, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, minced garlic, salt, fresh cracked pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix well until all ingredients are incorporated.
  3. Cut Puff Pastry: Cut the thawed puff pastry sheet in half to create two equal-sized rectangles.
  4. Assemble Swirls: Spread the spinach artichoke filling evenly over one half of the puff pastry sheet. Then lay the other half of the puff pastry sheet on top, sandwiching the filling between the two sheets.
  5. Shape Strips: Using a sharp knife, cut the layered puff pastry into 6 even strips along the longer side, ensuring you have long strips for twisting.
  6. Form Swirls: Twist each strip gently and then roll each twisted strip into a swirl, tucking the ends underneath to secure the shape for baking.
  7. Apply Egg Wash: Brush each swirl generously with the egg wash made by beating one egg with a teaspoon of water. This will give the pastry a golden, glossy finish.
  8. Bake: Place the swirls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, giving them space to expand. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and the pastry is fully cooked. Keep an eye on them as bake times may vary depending on your oven.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the swirls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature as a tasty appetizer or snack.

Notes

  • Ensure the puff pastry is thoroughly thawed but still cold for easier handling.
  • Adjust salt and red pepper flakes according to taste preference.
  • Use fresh spinach for best flavor but frozen well-drained spinach can be substituted.
  • Twisting the strips firmly but gently helps maintain the shape during baking.
  • For a vegetarian version, confirm the cheese used is free from animal rennet.
