Ingredients
Tuna Mixture
- 2 cans solid white albacore tuna in water (drained)
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 medium yellow onion (chopped)
- 1/8 tsp black pepper
- 1/8 tsp salt
Bread and Toppings
- 1/2 large loaf fresh French bread
- 1-2 medium tomatoes (chopped)
- 1 cup extra sharp cheddar cheese (shredded)
- 2 green onions (chopped)
- 2 tablespoons parsley (chopped, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the tuna melt bread.
- Mix Tuna Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, chopped onion, black pepper, and salt. Stir well until all ingredients are evenly mixed.
- Assemble on Bread: Place half of the large fresh French bread loaf on a baking sheet. Spread the tuna mixture evenly over the bread surface. Sprinkle chopped tomatoes on top of the tuna mixture and cover it all with shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese. Add a dash of black pepper over the cheese for extra flavor.
- Bake Covered: Loosely cover the assembled bread with aluminum foil making sure it does not touch the cheese. Place the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes to melt and warm the toppings.
- Broil Cheese: Remove the foil and switch the oven setting to broil. Broil the bread for 2-5 minutes, keeping a very close eye on it to prevent burning, until the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
- Cool and Garnish: Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions and parsley if desired.
- Slice and Serve: Using a sharp large knife, carefully slice the bread into individual portions and serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Keep a close watch during the broiling step as cheese can burn quickly.
- May substitute mayonnaise with Greek yogurt for a healthier twist.
- Use fresh, high-quality tuna for best flavor.
- Adjust the amount of tomatoes based on your preference for freshness.
- This recipe serves 8 but can be easily adjusted by changing the bread and tuna quantities.
