This easy apple cobbler features a sweet and perfectly spiced apple filling topped with a fluffy cinnamon cake-like batter. The cobbler is tender and moist with crisp golden edges, making it a comforting and delicious dessert perfect for any occasion.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 apples (Honey Crisp, Cosmic Crisp, and/or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

Topping

  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour or all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup milk (whole milk preferred)

Cinnamon Sugar

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Set aside for topping the cobbler later.
  2. Preheat and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 350° F. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch ceramic baking dish or a dish of similar size with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Cook Apple Filling: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, flour, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and kosher salt. Stir frequently as the apples cook and start to soften, about 4-5 minutes.
  4. Add Vanilla and Transfer to Baking Dish: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla bean paste. Transfer the spiced apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Prepare Topping Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Pour in the melted butter and milk, then whisk until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  6. Assemble Cobbler: Pour the batter evenly over the apples. Use a rubber spatula or spoon to gently spread the batter, making sure all the apples are covered.
  7. Add Cinnamon Sugar Topping: Sprinkle the prepared cinnamon sugar evenly over the batter layer for a sweet, crunchy finish.
  8. Bake: Place the baking dish in the center rack of the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the batter comes out clean.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 5 minutes. Serve warm on its own or with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • You can use a combination of apple varieties for more complex flavor and texture; Honey Crisp, Cosmic Crisp, and Golden Delicious work wonderfully.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute milk with almond or oat milk, and use a plant-based butter substitute.
  • This cobbler is best eaten warm, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and gently reheated.
  • For added crunch, sprinkle chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans on top along with the cinnamon sugar.
  • If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the sugar in the topping by a tablespoon.
