A classic American side dish, this Sweet Potato Casserole features creamy mashed sweet potatoes flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, and brown sugar, topped with a crunchy pecan streusel and gooey toasted marshmallows for a perfect balance of textures and sweetness. Ideal for holiday meals and family gatherings.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

Mashed Sweet Potatoes

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, cleaned (about 3-4 sweet potatoes)
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon table salt

Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups chopped pecans
  • 2 cups miniature marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sweet Potatoes: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prick the sweet potatoes all over with a fork and place them on a foil-lined baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray. Roast for 45 minutes to 1 hour until tender. Alternatively, peel and cut sweet potatoes into chunks and boil in water for about 10 minutes until fork tender. Drain well.
  2. Mash the Sweet Potatoes: Once slightly cooled if roasted, scoop the sweet potato flesh into a large bowl. Add melted butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Mash thoroughly using a potato masher or an electric hand mixer until smooth and well combined.
  3. Prepare the Baking Dish: Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Transfer the mashed sweet potatoes to the dish, smoothing the surface evenly with a rubber spatula.
  4. Make the Pecan Streusel Topping: In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, a pinch of salt, melted butter, and chopped pecans. Mix with a fork until crumbly. Sprinkle this evenly over the mashed sweet potatoes in the baking dish.
  5. Bake the Casserole: Increase oven temperature to 375°F. Bake the casserole uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, until heated through and the topping starts to brown.
  6. Add Marshmallow Topping: Remove the casserole from the oven and evenly sprinkle the miniature marshmallows on top. Switch the oven to broil and place the casserole back in the oven just until the marshmallows are toasted and golden brown, watching carefully to prevent burning.

Notes

  • You can roast or boil the sweet potatoes depending on time and preference. Roasting adds a deeper flavor.
  • Use miniature marshmallows rather than large for even topping coverage.
  • Watch closely while broiling marshmallows, as they brown quickly and can burn.
  • This casserole can be prepared a day ahead up to baking and refrigerated until ready to bake.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter and milk with plant-based alternatives.
