Texas Hash is a hearty and comforting casserole featuring ground beef, onions, green bell pepper, diced tomatoes, and uncooked rice, all baked together to tender perfection and optionally topped with melted cheddar cheese. This classic one-pan dish is perfect for a filling family meal.

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (16 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the dish.
  2. Cook the Beef and Vegetables: Warm a cast iron or any oven-safe skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, sliced onions, and chopped green bell pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender, then drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  3. Add Remaining Ingredients: Stir in the diced tomatoes with their juice, uncooked rice, salt, chili powder, and black pepper into the beef and vegetable mixture. Continue to heat on the stovetop until everything is warmed through.
  4. Bake the Hash: Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and transfer it to the preheated oven. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and tender.
  5. Add Cheese (Optional): If using cheese, uncover the skillet and sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the top. Return to the oven for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the cheese is nicely melted and bubbly. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, increase the chili powder or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Make sure to use an oven-safe skillet to avoid transferring to another dish for baking.
  • Try substituting the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner version.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat nicely.
  • Optional cheese adds a creamy, rich finish, but can be omitted for a dairy-free option.
