Ingredients
Sloppy Joe Mixture
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (85/15)
- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
- ½ green bell pepper, finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- ¼ cup beef broth (low sodium recommended)
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
For Serving
- 6 slices frozen garlic butter Texas toast
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Bake the Texas Toast: Preheat the oven and bake the frozen Texas toast slices according to the package directions, typically at 425°F for 8 to 10 minutes, until golden and crispy.
- Cook the Meat and Vegetables: While the toast is baking, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, diced onion, and diced green bell pepper. Cook, breaking the meat up as it browns, for about 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is fully cooked and the vegetables have softened.
- Drain Excess Grease: Drain the excess grease well from the skillet and return the pan to the stove over medium heat to continue cooking.
- Sauté Garlic: Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
- Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and beef broth. Mix all ingredients until fully combined.
- Season the Mixture: Season the filling with chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine and taste, adjusting seasoning as needed.
- Simmer the Filling: Reduce heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your liking.
- Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Remove the toasted Texas toast from the oven. Place the slices on a serving plate or individual plates. Spoon the sloppy joe filling generously over each slice.
- Add Cheese and Serve: Top immediately with shredded sharp cheddar cheese if desired, and serve right away while the toast is hot and crispy. Enjoy!
Notes
- You can use regular bread if Texas toast isn’t available, but it won’t be as thick and crispy.
- For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the filling.
- Use low sodium beef broth to better control the saltiness of the dish.
- Cheese topping is optional but adds a rich and melty finish to the sandwich.
- Leftover filling can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop.
